HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i women's tennis teamfell to No. 6 Baylor, 5-2. The loss evened the Rainbow Wahine's record to 1-1 on the season on Saturday at the UH Tennis Complex.
 
In doubles action, UH came up just short of picking up the first point of the day. After the No. 2 pair of Barbara Pinterova and Martina Kostalova lost to Diana Nakic and Sona Novakova, 8-1, the 'Bows bounced back with the No.3 team of Xenia Suworowa and Aglae Van den Bergh defeating Megan Horter and Doris Llamas, 8-5 to even the score. But the No. 1 match came down to the end, with the Bears duo of Nina Secerbegovic and Jordaan Sanford outlasting UH's Jamie Pawid and Katarina Poljakova, 9-7 to capture the first point.
 
Baylor, however, closed the match out by winning the top four singles matches in straight sets. In the No. 1 match, the Bears' Nakic defeated Poljakova, 6-3, 6-0. Novakova claimed a 6-0, 6-2 win over Pawid in the No. 2 slot. BU's Secerbegovic posted a 6-4, 6-2 win over Pinterova, and Sanford defeated Kostalova, 6-0, 6-1.
 
Two bright spots for the Rainbow Wahine in singles were in the No. 5 and No. 6 matches. Suworowa came through with a tough 6-3, 7-6 (6) win over Horter in the No. 5 slot, while in the No. 6 match, Kelsie Daguio blanked Llamas, 6-0, 6-0.
 
Next week, Hawai'i hosts the Rainbow Wahine Spring Invitational—featuring Kansas, Kentucky, and Washington State from Jan. 12-14.
