Men’s Volleyball Stuffs Tritons In Opener

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i put up a block party in a straight set victory over UC San Diego, Thursday in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation and season opener for both teams at the Stan Sheriff Center. Set scores were 25-16, 25-20, and 25-20.
 
The Warriors (1-0, 1-0 MPSF) put up 11 total blocks including six block solos and limited the Tritons (0-1, 0-1) to a team hitting percentage of .000. UH hit .306 as a team with no player reaching double figures in kills.
 
Freshman Johann Timmer led the way with nine kills to lead the Warriors while fellow newcomer JP Marks added eight kills. Senior outside hitter Steven Hunt tallied eight kills and three block solos.
 
Senior middle blocker Jarrod Lofy had four blocks and UC Irvine transfer Nick West made his UH debut with six kills and two blocks.
 
The Tritons played 11 of their 14 eligible players and were led by Chris Andrulis' six kills.
 
The Warriors dominated the opening set surging to a 10-4 lead. After four straight Triton hitting errors, UH lead 15-7 at the media timeout and cruised to a 25-16 victory.
 
UH jumped out to an early lead in Set 2 before the UCSD rallied to take a 11-9 lead after a 7-1 run. But the Warriors responded and Marks' third service ace at 12-11, gave UH the lead they would not relinquish.
 
The teams meet again Friday at 7:00 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center.
