HONLULU – The University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team made it two-for-two in its two-match non-conference series against Grand Canyon with a four-set win Saturday night at the Stan Sheriff Center. Set scores were 25-21, 27-29, 25-16, and 25-21.
UH (4-5) rebounded from a lackluster five-set win on Friday, by hitting .318 as a team and recording 15.5 team blocks. Four Warriors hit in double figures kills and three had double-figure dig totals.
For the second straight night, senior outside hitter
Steven Hunt led the team in hitting with 21 kills at a .364 clip. The Toronto, Ontario native reached the 20-kill mark for the third time in the last four matches.
Freshman outside hitter
Taylor Averill had his best match as a Warrior posting career-highs of 12 kills, 10 digs, and seven blocks. For the second straight night middle blocker
Nick West pounded 13 kills to go along with six blocks. Fellow middle
Jarrod Lofy had a match-high eight blocks for the second straight match.
Outside hitter
JP Marks also hit double figures with 10 kills while libero
Nick Castello had a match-high 15 digs.
Ben Ponnet led the Antelopes (5-5) with 21 kills on .357 hitting. Taylor Galliano was the only other Grand Canyon player to reach double figures with 10 kills.
In Set 1, the pulled ahead late taking a 22-19 lead following a kill by
Nick West and 'Lopes hitting error. UH maintained its lead until
JP Marks ended it with his team-leading 11
th service ace.
Midway through Set 2, the Warriors used a 5-1 run, fueled by three 'Lopes hitting errors, for a 16-14 lead. Leading 24-21, the Warriors were blocked three times while hitting for the set and saw themselves down set point at 25-24 until Marks ended the four-point drought. UH extinguished two more set points with Marks' seventh and eighth kills until Ponnet's third straight kill and service ace gave Grand Canyon the 29-27 victory.
UH came out of the break and stormed out to a 15-7 lead in Set 3 with a 11-2 run. The Warriors would not be threatened the rest of the way in a 25-16 rout. Hawai'i hit .400 in the set and held the 'Lopes to nine kills and eight errors.
The Warriors surged ahead 12-9 in Set 4 and extended their lead to 23-17 before the 'Lopes made one last comeback. GCU scored four straight to close to 23-21. An Antelope hitting error gave UH match point and Hunt blasted his 21
st kill for the match winner.
Hawai'i returns to Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action with a two-match series at Pacific, Friday, Feb. 3 and Saturday, Feb. 4 in Stockton, Calif.
