HONOLULU –The University of Hawai`i sailing team captured the Peter Wenner Rainbow Invite for the second year in a row. Fourteen different teams, representing nine schools, including host UH, competed, Jan. 21-22, at Keehi Lagoon.
Thirteen races in each the A and B divisions were completed during the two-day event, named after former Rainbow sailor Peter Wenner, who tragically lost his life in a recreational boating accident in November 2008. Host Hawai`i fielded four teams in all, including three coed and one women's team. The four teams finished in the top five spots, headed by coed sqaud Rainbows 1 which captured the regatta with 77 points.
Rainbows 1 was headed by
Craig Schifferns, and
Lindsay Stewart in the A Division and Mitch Icard, and
Ana-Melissa Kea in the B Division closed out the regatta. Rainbows 0 finished just one point shy of the title.
Adam Pokras and
Cienna Patmont sailed in the A Division and
Michael Hanson and
Bree Nidds sailed in the B Division.
Rainbows 2, represented by
Tate Wester and
Katrina Berry in the A Division and Fizz Foster and
Holly Nishiguchi in the B Division, ended the weekend placing third with 124 points. The Rainbow Wahine team finished the regatta in fifth place with 133 points.
Hanne Nagatani and
Alix Gibson sailed in the A Division, and
Madeline Kennedy and
Lani Johnson raced in the B Division.
The Rainbow Wahine next race at the South Florida Intersectional, Feb. 18-19, while the coed team will compete in Stanford Team Race Intersectional in California, March 3-4 in Redwood City, Calif.
