ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine sailing team wound up its final East Coast regatta of the spring regular season by placing fifth at the St. Mary's Fleet Race held March 14-15 on the St. Mary's River in Maryland.
Competing in a field of 18 schools, the Rainbow Wahine continued to improve on their previous trips to St. Mary's, finishing three places higher than last season's appearance in the event. With the A and B divisions completing 14 races each, the 'Bows featured seven different sailors in the regatta. Martha Schuessler skippered all races in the A division, with Amanda Turner and Avery Hogue splitting time at crew. Stella Taherian primarily skippered in the B division, with Elin Reigstad at crew. Kahlia Bailey raced at both positions in the B division throughout this event.
UH's A division finished with 96 points and the B division finished with 97, for a total of 193. Despite some struggles in the regatta, the 'Bows had some strong performances, placing in the top two in six of their races. In those displays, the A and B divisions each had a first-place finish.
Host St. Mary's finished just nine points back of the 'Bows in sixth place, and Boston College easily secured the event title, scoring a regatta-low 114 points.
The Rainbow Wahine will next be in action at the Pacific Coast Collegiate Sailing Conference Women's Team and Fleet Race Championships, held in Lake Whatcom, Wash., over the weekend of April 10-12.
