HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i men's tennis team was defeated Friday by Gonzaga, 5-2. The match was the team's first dual competition of the spring season. They retake the court Saturday versus No. 16 Mississippi State.
The Bulldogs earned the doubles point on the heels of a 9-8(4) win at the one. After
Chas Okamoto and
Chris Meyer won 8-5 at three doubles, the Gonzaga pair of Scott Sullivan and Zhia Hwa Chong evened the match with an 8-3 win over
Charlie Rice and
Danilo Casanova. The Bulldogs grabbed the doubles point when Olivier Jamin and Alvaro Nazal topped UH's
Jonathan Brooklyn and
Nils Schuhmann.
The 'Bows won the first two matches of singles play but would fall in the rest. Okamoto continued his stellar play with a 6-3, 6-1 third singles win over Jamin. Casanova picked up UH's other singles win, defeating Sullivan, 6-4, 6-4, at the five. Brooklyn lost in an intense match at the one, suffering a 6-4, 7-6(10) loss to Nazal.
