Game Notes
The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team (9-6, 1-0 WAC) takes its first Western Athletic Conference road trip of the season for a pair of games beginning with a meeting versus long-time rival Fresno State (7-10, 0-2 WAC) on Thursday, Jan. 12. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. PT (5:00 p.m. HT) at the Save Mart Center.
The Rainbow Warriors have won seven of their last nine games, including a convincing 82-69 win over San Jose State in the conference opener for both teams last Saturday. It was UH's first win in a conference opener in six years as the 'Bows stand 1-0 in the WAC for the first time since the 2005-06 campaign. That was also the last season UH started 2-0, something the 'Bows will aim for when they play at Fresno on Thursday.
Hawai'i is led by the ramped up frontcourt play of
Joston Thomas and
Vander Joaquim. Thomas has averaged 21.5 ppg and 11.5 rpg and Joaquim 17.5 ppg and 10.0 rpg in UH's last two games. The pair combined for more than half the team's points (47) and rebounds (22) rebounds in UH's win over San Jose State.
Fresno State, meanwhile, enters the contest having dropped a pair of road games at Utah State (72-53) and Idaho (63-59) to open league play. The Bulldogs, lead by first-year coach Rodney Terry, are 4-1 at home this season. Sophomore guard Kevin Olekaibe is the second-leading scorer in the WAC at 18.0 ppg.
The trip to Fresno will mark the beginning of a stretch that will see the Rainbow Warriors play five of its next seven contests on the road. Following its game against the Bulldogs, UH will play at conference leader and preseason favorite Nevada (12-3, 2-0 WAC) on Saturday, Jan. 14. The Bows are 2-3 away from the Stan Sheriff Center this year, including 1-2 in true road games.
