Cross Country Hosts 10th Big Wave Invitational

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i women's cross country team will host the 10th Annual Big Wave Invitational Saturday, Sept. 10 at the Kane'ohe Klipper Golf Course on the Marines Corps Base Hawai'i.

The meet will serve as a tune-up for the Rainbow Wahine who hosts the Western Athletic Conference Championships at Kane'ohe Klipper in October. In preparation for the WAC Championship, for the first time the women's race will be lengthened to a 5K race. The 5K men's race begins at 7:05 a.m. followed by the women's race at 7:35 a.m.

Competing along with host UH are the state's Division II teams Hawai'i Pacific, Brigham Young-Hawai'i, Chaminade, UH-Hilo along with Alaska-Anchorage.

The Rainbow Wahine are the defending champions, winning the title for the fourth time. Ashley Aitken captured the individual title while returnees Kevyn Murphy took third with a time of 15:33.78 and Alison Williams was fifth at 15:44.31.

Big Wave Invitational History
Over the last decade, the Rainbow Wahine have captured four Big Wave Invitational titles in 2001, '04, '06, and '10. Individually, UH runners have won titles in 2000 & '01 (Cheryl Smith), 2006 & '07 (Chantelle Laan Wilder), 2009 (Jessica Forrester), and 2010 (Ashley Aitken).

Recapping the HPU Invitational
The Rainbow Wahine opened the 2011 season by finishing third at the Hawai'i Pacific Invitational, Sept. 3, in Ka'a'awa Valley. Sophomore Kevyn Murphy was the team's top finisher, placing eighth overall. The Manhattan Beach, Calif., native completed the 5K course in 19:20 just ahead of teammate Alison Williams, who placed 12th at 19:45. Two other Rainbow Wahine placed in the Top 20 as newcomer Louise Mulvey was 17th at 20:03 while junior Ashlee Jimenez followed closely in 19th at 20:10. Newcomer Ariana Horton rounded out the top five, placing 22nd at 20:43.
