Women’s Soccer Victimized By Own Goal

Box Score

MORAGA, Calif. – The University of Hawai`i women's soccer team wrapped up a three-match road swing through California with an agonizing 1-0 loss to Saint Mary's on Tuesday afternoon. The Rainbow Wahine surrendered an own goal in the 56th minute in dropping their sixth straight match to start the season.

Saint Mary's (4-1-1) Kaytlyn Steele sent a hard cross the ball from near the left box which bounced off a UH defender's knee and into the back of the net. It was the second time this year that UH lost on an own goal. The Rainbow Wahine fell to North Dakota State, 3-2, at home on Aug. 27 after an inadvertent second-half header was converted into the decisive winner for the Bison.

UH dropped to 1-8 all-time against Saint Mary's. The Gaels defeated UH, 3-0, at Saint Mary's Stadium last year.

The Gaels out-shot UH, 11-6. Senior defender Brittani Lum led UH with three shots while Kanani Taaca had five saves in goal for the Rainbow Wahine.

The Rainbow Wahine now return home to host Hawaii Pacific on Sunday, Sept. 11. Kickoff is set for 5:00 p.m. at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
