Women’s Soccer Opens WAC Play This Weekend

Game Notes

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i women's soccer team begins league play this weekend at home with a pair of Western Athletic Conference matches. The Rainbow Wahine open against defending regular-season champion Utah State on Friday, Sept. 30 at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is at 7:00 p.m.

The Rainbow Wahine will also host Nevada on Sunday, Oct. 2 at 5:00 p.m. Both matches are free of charge.

This will be UH' first action in nearly two weeks after coming off a pair of losses to San Diego State (3-0) on Sept. 16 and UNLV (3-0) on Sept. 18 in the UNLV Nike Classic. The Rainbow Wahine look to get back on the scoreboard after being shutout in two straight matches. During the layoff, the Rainbow Wahine tuned-up this past Sunday when they picked up a 4-1 win in the annual alumnae match.

For the Rainbow Wahine, this is their 16th and final season in the WAC. The Rainbow Wahine have captured three regular-season titles and one tournament championship during their membership. UH has struggled in conference since winning both the regular season and tournament titles in 2007 having missed qualifying for the WAC Tournament the last two seasons.

UH was selected to finish seventh in the WAC preseason poll as determined by a vote of the league's eight head coaches earlier this summer. San Jose State and Utah State tied for the top spot as the favorite for this year's title. The 2011 WAC Soccer Tournament will be in Fresno, Calif. November 3-4, 6 with the top six teams qualifying.

Following this weekend's action, UH will head to road to play at Idaho (Oct. 7) and Seattle (Oct. 9).
