No.10 Hawai‘i Wins Five-Set Thriller Over No.23 Long Beach State

HONOLULU – At the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Volleyball Classic, the No.10 University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team defeated No.23 Long Beach State in five sets, 25-17, 21-25, 23-25, 25-19, 15-11. UH and UCLA will play on Sunday for the tournament title. 

Kanani Danielson equaled a match-high 18 kills for Hawai'i (5-0) to go along with 11 digs and four blocks. Chanteal Satele adding 13 kills and four blocks and Brittany Hewitt recorded a match and season-high 12 blocks. 

Janisa Johnson posted 12 kills and 17 digs for Long Beach State (2-3) with Caitlin Ledoux adding 18 kills. 

The 'Bows opened the match with a solid 25-17 first set win. UH trailed midway but went on a 15-3 run to win going away. Hewitt and Danielson each recorded a kill to wrap up the set. 

The 49ers evened matters with a 25-21 win in set two, grabbing an early lead they would not relinquish. The 'Bows found themselves in an early four-point deficit and three times came back to tie the score, but never took the lead. Leading by one point, LBSU ran off five straight points to help seal the win. Johnson and Erin Juley (46 assists) both recorded kills to aid in the late spurt. 

Long Beach State continued that momentum into the third set where it earned a hard-fought 25-23 win. Hawai'i again trailed most of the way and made a run to try and steal the set, but three costly service errors helped the 49ers to a 2-1 lead. 

UH rebounded for a 25-19 win to send the match into a fifth and deciding set. The 'Bows held a slim lead for most of the set before going on an 8-4 run to even the match. Satele and Hewitt each recorded a block and a kill during the run. The final set was equally as close as the match, but with the score tied at 10-10, Hawai'i recorded five of the match's final six points capped by Jane Croson's match-winning kill. Croson posted 17 kills on the evening. 

There were 6,542 tickets issued for the contest, and a turnstile count of 5,418. UCLA defeated Ohio State in four sets, 25-21, 25-19, 23-25, 25-23, in the opening match of the evening. 

Start time for the match between the 'Bows and Bruins is set for 5:00 p.m. and will be preceded by Ohio State vs. Long Beach State at 3:00 p.m.
