Women’s Soccer Surges Past HPU, 6-2

Box Score

WAIPAHU, O'ahu – The University of Hawai'i women's soccer team broke through for its first win of the season with an emphatic 6-2 win over cross-town rival Hawai'i Pacific, 6-2, Sunday at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium. In the process, the team also handed Michele Nagamine her first-ever win as UH head coach, ironically against her former team.

The Rainbow Wahine (1-6) scored two early goals, then poured it on in the second half when the out-scored the Sea Warriors (2-1) 4-1 after the break. Five different Rainbow Wahine scored for UH with freshman Tiana Fujimoto leading UH with a pair of scores. The 'Bows out-shot the Sea Warriors 25-8 for the match.

Hawai'i got off to a fast start with two goals in the first 15 minutes, including one by Amber Fuller, a HPU transfer who stung her former team with the first goal of the match at the 4:25 mark. When Skye Shimabukuro cashed in on a penalty kick 10 minutes later it looked like smooth sailing for UH. However, the Sea Warriors responded late in the second half when Kaua Wall put home a rebound off a set piece to cut the lead to just 2-1 at the half.

UH settled all doubt in the second half with four unanswered goals, beginning with a Brittani Lum header off a corner kick at 62 minute. The Rainbow Wahine then really broke things open with a trio of goals in an 85-second span. Freshman Krystal Pascua scored her first career goal on a long-range shot from 30-yards to put UH up 4-1.

A little more than a minute later Fujimoto scored a pair of goals just 19 seconds apart for the quickest consecutive goals in program history. The freshman forward now has three goals on the year.

UH improved to a perfect 10-0 all-time against the Sea Warriors while tallying their highest goal total since a 7-0 win over Idaho in 2007.

The Rainbow Wahine now head out for their second road trip of the season when they participate in the UNLV Nike Classic next weekend. First up for UH is San Diego State on Friday, Sept. 16 at 4:30 p.m. PT (1:30 p.m. HT)
