KANE'OHE, O'ahu – The University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine cross country finished in third place at UH's 10th Annual Big Wave Invitational at the Kane'ohe Klipper golf course Saturday.
Hawai'i's top finisher was sophomore
Kevyn Murphy, who took eighth place with a time of 19:31:38. Five other 'Bows finished in the top 20—
Ashlee Jimenez and Celeste Almarez took 12th and 13th place respectively with times of 19:55:02 and 19:55:72, while
Alison Williams (20:12:59),
Louise Mulvey (20:38:25), and
Ariana Horton (20:43:28) finished 18th, 19th, and 20th.
The Rainbow Wahine tallied 64 points for third place, right behind Brigham Young-Hawai'i's 55 points that secured second. Alaska-Anchorage swept the top three individual places and ran away with the title with 19 points. Hawai'i Pacific finished in fourth with 117 points followed by UH-Hilo (147) and Chaminade (161).
The Seawolves from Alaska also captured the men's title, posting a perfect 15 points after sweeping the top five places—the first four places were all less than a second apart, led by Yonatan Yilma's 15:45:70. Coming in second was BYU-H (52), HPU (86) and Chaminade (100).
The meet served as a pre-curser for the Rainbow Wahine who host the Western Athletic Conference Championships at Kane'ohe Klipper in late October. In preparation for the WAC Championship, the women's race was lengthened to a 5K race for the first time in the 10-year history of the Invitational.
The Rainbow Wahine will split their squad for their next event between the Stanford Invitational in Stanford, Calif. and the BYUH Invitational in La'ie, O'ahu on Sept. 24.
