HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i Warrior football team opens its 2011 season by hosting one of the Pac-12's newest members, Colorado, Saturday, Sept. 3 in a nationally televised game on ESPN2. Kickoff is 4:15 p.m. at Aloha Stadium.
The teams will play for the second straight season after the Buffaloes won 31-13 in Boulder, Colo., last season. In that game, the Warriors led 10-0 at the half, before Colorado ran off 17 unanswered points and out-scored UH, 31-3 after halftime. The teams had previously met only once prior, with Hawai'i winning, 13-0 in 1925.
Under fourth-year head coach Greg McMackin, Hawai'i finished 10-4 in 2010; captured a share of the Western Athletic Conference title; and appeared in the Sheraton Hawai'i Bowl for the sixth time in nine years. The Warriors are the preseason favorite to win the WAC, as they prepare to leave the league at the end of the this season before moving to the Mountain West Conference in 2012. Quarterback
Bryant Moniz is the consensus preseason WAC player of the year and is mentioned on the watch list of nearly every major award as the nation's top player and quarterback.
Colorado finished 5-7 and 2-6 in the Big 12 last season. The Buffaloes will be led by first-year head coach Jon Embree, who inherits a team which returns 17 starters from a year ago.
