Women’s Soccer Clipped By North Dakota State

Box Score

WAIPAHU, O'ahu  – The University of Hawai'i women's soccer team rallied from a slow start but eventually fell to North Dakota State, 3-2,  in the 'OHANA Hotels and Resorts No Ka Oi tournament Saturday night at Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium. UH dropped to 0-2 on the young season.

UH gave up a pair of goals in the first 12 minutes of the match only to rally and tie the score early in the second half. However, a defensive mishap led to an own goal in the 63rd minute and the team would not recover.

NDSU (2-1) got on the board first just five minutes into the match when UH was unable to clear the ball out of the box. Morgan DeMike chased after a deflected ball and put home a shot past UH goalkeeper Kanani Taaca from 12 yards out. The Bison followed up with a goal at the 11:43 mark as Danielle Boldenow put a through ball to Katie Tallas who maneuvered past Taaca and scored an open-net goal.

UH responded in the 28th minute when they were awarded a free kick from 25 yards out. Brittani Lum took full advantage sending a laser in the upper far post to cut the deficit to 2-1. It was the second straight match Lum scored and the fourth time in the last five matches dating back to last season.

The Rainbow Wahine would equalize less than four minutes into the second off another free kick. Rachel Domingo served up a ball from 28 yards out into the box, where a streaking Colleen Burns put her knee on the ball and sent it floating over the arm of NDSU goalkeeper Kalani Bertsch.

Unfortunately that score was short lived as the decisive goal came off a botched defensive play in the 63rd minute. Bison Abbey Moenkedick's lofted a throw in towards the UH goal which bounced off the head of a Rainbow Wahine defender and into the back of the net.

UH and California will conclude the 'OHANA Hotels and Resorts No Ka Oi on Sunday, Aug. 28. Kickoff is set for 5:00 p.m.
