Rainbows Split Doubleheader With San Jose State

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i baseball team split a doubleheader Friday with San Jose State. The Rainbows move to 29-21 overall and 14-5 in the WAC, with the Spartans now at 32-20 overall and 10-9 in conference. 

Game one saw UH jump out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning. Kolten Wong (1 H, 1 R, 1 RBI) opened the scoring with an RBI-single, then Jeff Van Doornum (2-3, 2 RBI) added to the lead with a two-RBI base hit. Wong and Zack Swasey (1 H, 1 R) scored on the play. 

Hawai'i tacked on two more runs in the fourth inning. A.J. Bayus (1 H, 1 R, 1 RBI) singled in Sean Montplaisir (1 H, 1 R) who had led off the inning with a triple. 

Breland Almadova batted 3-4 with one run and one RBI to lead Hawai'i, with Zack Jones and Craig Hertler each collecting two hits for the Spartans. 

Zach Gallagher (5-2) recorded a career-high seven strikeouts in earning the win. He pitched 5.2 innings allowing two runs on seven hits. Lenny Linsky collected his 12th save in 1.1 innings of work. Esteban Guzman (5-2) allowed five runs in six innings for the loss. 

In game two, San Jose State used a five-run eighth inning to take the win. Kitamura and Wong each drove home a run in the second inning, but Tyler Christian cut the lead in half with a solo homerun one inning later. Christian led the Spartans with two hits, three runs, and one RBI. In the eighth, after SJSU plated three runs, Nick Shulz (2 H, 2 RBI) delivered a two-RBI base hit to give his team a 7-2 lead. 

Bayus batted 2-4 with one run to lead the Rainbows. 

Blake McFarland (7-2) earned the win for the Spartans, pitching seven innings allowing two runs on seven hits. Blair Walters (6-2) was the pitcher of record for the 'Bows. He allowed three earned runs in relief of starter Jarrett Arakawa

There were 4,374 tickets issued for the contest, and a turnstile count of 3,265. 

The Rainbows and Spartans will take a day off before concluding their series on Sunday at 1:05 p.m. Following the game, seniors Sean Montplaisir, Jeff Van Doornum, Zach Gallagher, Blair Walters, and Alex Capaul will be honored for their contributions to Rainbow baseball.
