Tournament Central
BOISE, Idaho – The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team will take its championship hopes to Boise for the 2011 Western Athletic Conference Tournament, April 28-30 at the Appleton Tennis Center and the Julia Davis Park.
The Rainbow Wahine have advanced to the tournament semifinals in each of the last two seasons and look for a breakthrough this year. UH (8-12, 2-3 WAC) enters the tournament as the No. 6 seed and will face No. 3 seed Nevada in a quarterfinal match-up, Thursday, April 28 at 12:00 p.m. MT (8:00 a.m. HT).
The Wolfpack (11-9, 5-1 WAC) finished the regular season on a six match win streak defeating three WAC opponents along the way, Boise State, Utah State and New Mexico State. Nevada won the regular season match-up against the Rainbow Wahine, 4-3, dominating in doubles action and claiming victory on three of the six singles courts. Emma Verberne and Aodhnait Lombard have both won their last five singles matches in a row, going 8-2 in their last ten matches.
Hawai'i will look to shake off a pair of conference losses that concluded its regular season. UH was clipped in a tight 4-3 loss at New Mexico State on April 22, then dropped its regular-season finale to Boise State, 7-0, on April 24. UH has remained in Boise since and will have been on the road for nearly 10 straight days when the tournament commences on Thursday.
Sophomore
Katarina Poljakova leads the team at the No. 1 court with a 15-5 singles mark in dual matches. Freshman newcomer
Xenia Suworowa, meanwhile, has been also impressive with a 5-1 dual match mark since joining the team mid-season.
