BOISE, Idaho – The University of Hawai'i men's tennis team takes aim for its fourth straight title when it heads for Boise and the 2011 Western Athletic Conference Tournament, April 29-May 1 at the Appleton Tennis Center.
Despite having won three straight WAC Tournament titles and returning the core of last year's championship squad, the Rainbow Warriors enter this week's competition as decided underdogs. UH (6-12, 2-4 WAC) is the tournament fifth seed and will open the tournament against No. 4 seed and host No. 55 Boise State in an opening round match. First serve is 3:00 p.m. MT (11:00 a.m. HT) on Friday, April 29. The winner of that match will take on the top seed in the tournament, No. 42 Fresno State (14-8, 5-0 WAC).
The Broncos (15-14, 3-3 WAC) took down the Warriors, 5-2, during the regular season. Boise State will be armed with one nationally ranked singles player, No. 119 Damian Hume, who finished the season with a 12-11 dual match record. Nathan Sereke has also been playing well in singles, winning his last three matches in a row with a record of 8-1 in his last nine matches.
UH has played the toughest schedule in school history with 11 of Hawai'i's 12 losses this year coming against ranked foes. Senior Dennis Lajoloa leads the team with a 10-6 singles record in dual matches, including seven wins in his last 10 matches. Lajola is currently ranked No. 114 in the latest ITA singles rankings.
