HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i baseball team defeated Sacramento State Sunday, 3-2. The Rainbows sweep the series to improve to 18-14 overall and open the WAC season at 4-0 for the first time in 11 years. The Hornets drop to 9-24 and 0-4.
The Rainbows opened the scoring early with Zach Swasey (3-3) delivering a two-RBI double to give his team a 2-0 lead after two innings.
A stalemate ensued until the eighth inning. Kolten Wong (0-2, 2 R) walked, then stole both second and third before being singled home by Jeff Van Doornum (1-3, 1 RBI).
Zach Gallagher (4-1) pitched seven innings for the win. He allowed no runs on four hits with five strikeouts. Tanner Mendoca (1-3) tossed seven innings in receiving the loss, allowing two runs on three hits. Blair Walters came on to collect his second save of the season. He forced a fly out to Breland Almadova (0-3, 1 R) in centerfield with the bases loaded to end the game.
Blake Miller led the Hornets with two hits, and Will Soto added one hit and one RBI.
There were 2,683 tickets sold for the contest, and a turnstile count of 1,275.
Hawai'i next hosts Louisiana Tech in another four-game WAC series. First pitch of game one is set for Friday, April 15, at 6:35 p.m.
