HONOLULU – Kolten Wong belted a walk-off homerun in the tenth inning to propel the University of Hawai'i past Portland, 6-5. Wong's roundtripper, his second of the game, helped UH improve to 7-9 and achieve the series split. Portland drops to 8-6.
Zach Gallagher (2-0) earned the win for the Rainbows with Scott Buress (0-1) tagged with the loss for Portland. UH starter Jesse Moore pitched seven innings allowing three earned runs with a career-high eight strikeouts.
Wong recorded two hits, two runs, and three RBI to lead the 'Bows. After the Pilots had rallied to take a 5-3 lead, Wong crushed his first homerun, a two-run blast over the right field wall to tie the game. He then won the game with homerun No. 2 two innings later.
Matt Mardesich led the Pilots with two runs and four RBI. Kevin Armijo added one hit, one run, and one RBI.
Portland opened the scoring in the fourth inning after consecutive doubles by Mardesich and Turner Gill (1 H, 1 R). The 'Bows rallied to take a 3-1 lead spearheaded by a Jeff Van Doornum (2-4, 1 R, 1 RBI) homerun, but a four-run eighth inning by UP gave them a 5-3 lead.
Sean Montplaisir recorded two hits, one run, and one RBI, and David Peterson added two hits.
There were 2,889 tickets issued for the contest and a turnstile count of 1,638.
The Rainbows and Pilots conclude their series, as UH continues its homestand next weekend versus Centenary College. Game one is set for Friday, March 18, at 6:35 p.m.
