WESTWOOD, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team avenged a straight-set loss to No. 7 UCLA two nights earlier with a 25-19, 25-21, 25-22 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation victory Saturday at Pauley Pavilion.
As a team, the Warriors (6-7, 4-4 MPSF) hit .329 compared to .176 for the Bruins (8-8, 3-7). All-American opposite
Jonas Umlauft had a match-high 15 kills on .387 hitting. Setter
Nejc Zemljak dished out 36 assists along with four services aces and three blocks.
Outside hitter
Steven Hunt added nine kills including the match-winner while middle blocker
Brennon Dyer had six kills with no errors in 10 swings and a pair of service aces.
Kyle Caldwell led the Bruins with 10 kills and 11 digs.
The victory was UH's first in straight sets over the Bruins in Westwood, Calif., since 2005 and the Warriors snapped a five-match road losing streak to UCLA.
Ahead one set to none, the Warriors took a big advantage late in the second set by scoring three straight points to break open a 20-all tie. UH closed out the set with a solo block by Dyer and a Bruin hitting error.
The Warriors sealed the straight set victory midway through the third set with a 7-1 run, which included a pair of kills by Umlauft and Dyer and an ace by Zemljak for a 21-16 lead.
Hawai'i continues its four-match road trip with a two-match series against UC Irvine, Monday, Feb. 21 and Tuesday, Feb. 22.
