Women's Hoops Continues Roadtrip at New Mexico State

HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team (8-16, 2-9 WAC) had its two-game win streak snapped at Reno against Nevada, 42-69 on Saturday, Feb. 12. The 'Bows now continue their three-game roadtrip at New Mexico State on Feb. 15 and conclude their final regular season roadtrip at Louisiana Tech on Feb. 17.

The 'Bows are looking to avenge their 58-74 loss to NMSU in Honolulu on Jan. 6 earlier this year. Hawai'i is also looking to snap an 18-game conference road game losing streak. The last time the 'Bows posted a “W” was at Utah State on Jan. 30, 2009. 

Freshman Kamilah Jackson, continues to lead Hawai'i with 11.8 rebounds per game and is fifth in the NCAA DI. Jackson also remains at the top of the team averaging 11.9 points per game. The frosh forward has made a huge impact for the 'Bows this year, tallying nine double-doubles and she has done the job both on the offensive and defensive glass, grabbing 121 offensive and 139 defensive boards for a total of 260 rebounds as a rookie. She has over double the amount of rebounds as the next Rainbow Wahine (Arbuckle's 128). In conference games, she is averaging a staggering 11.7 rebounds per game along with 9.4 points per game.

Fellow freshman Shawna-Lei Kuehu has steadily been moving up the team stats and has come on strong to currently lead UH in conference games with 114 points and 10.4 points per game. She also leads the 'Bows with 14 blocks and 20 steals in the WAC and is second on the team with 4.9 rebounds and an .808 free-throw percentage. Overall, she is third on the team with 9.3 points per game and a team-high 38 steals. Kuehu is second on the team with 25 blocks, 61 assists and 5.0 rebounds per game.

Senior point guard Keisha Kanekoa is having a solid season. She is second on the team with 11.2 points per game and leads UH with 82 assists, a .786 free-throw percentage, and 33 steals. Megan Tinnin is fourth on the squad, averaging 8.8 points per game. She also leads UH with 39 3-pointers made and Tinnin has 35 steals. She has helped to crash the boards contributing 4.0 rebounds per game

Opponent: New Mexico State is alone in fifth place in the WAC standings with a 4-5 record. they are on a three game losing streak--two back-to-back to conference leader Louisiana Tech.
Coaches: Hawai'i head coach Dana Takahara-Dias is in her second season at UH (18-36). Nevada head coach, Jane Albright has a 56-42 record at Nevada in three seasons and is 450-354 overall in 27 years as a head coach.
Series Information: New Mexico State leads the series 15-13 over the 'Bows. NMSU defeated UH earlier this season on Jan. 6, 74-58 in Honolulu.
