MALIBU, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team got off to a quick start but lost momentum in the second half in a 73-67 loss to Pepperdine Saturday night at Firestone Fieldhouse. UH dropped to 2-3 with the loss.
UH led by as many as eight points midway through the first half and the game was tied at the break. But the Waves (4-3) scored the first basket of the second half and never relinquished its lead.
Freshman point guard
Shaquille Stokes led UH with 18 points while
Joston Thomas added 15. Junior
Hauns Brereton finished with a career-high 14 point with all his points coming in the second half.
The key play of the game occurred with five minutes remaining in the game and UH trailing 57-51. Junior center
Vander Joaquim was assessed a personal foul, then received a pair of technical fouls, earning an ejection. Pepperdine was rewarded six straight free throws, with Corbin Moore converting five of those to give the Waves a 62-51 lead.
Pepperdine wouldn't look back. Moore led four Waves in double-digits with 17 points as Pepperdine ultimately buried 27-of-35 free throws. .
A total of four players fouled out for UH, including leading scorer
Zane Johnson, who finished with a season-low nine points.
UH will continue it two-game California road trip with a meeting against Pacific on Tuesday, Dec. 6 at 7:00 p.m. PT (5:00 p.m. HT). The Rainbow Warriors won the first meeting in Honolulu, 75-70, on Nov. 25.
