HONOLULU—The University of Hawai`i women's basketball team (5-9) fell to Florida Gulf Coast (9-2), 72-52 on the second day of the Pepsi Rainbow Wahine Invitational. Sophomore forward
Vicky Tagalicod scored 14 points for the second straight night to lead the 'Bows on offense, while
Kamilah Jackson posted her eighth double-double of the season with 10 points and 12 rebounds on Thursday night at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Tagalicod matched her season-high with 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the floor and 2-of-4 from the free-throw line. She chipped in four rebounds with an assist and a block. Jackson went 3-of-7 in field goals with four made foul shots for her 10 points while securing a game-high 12 rebounds. She also had three assists, two steals and a block on the night. Sophmore
Sydney Haydel gave UH a spark off the bench, going 4-for-4 from the floor for eight points. She contributed four boards as well.
Hawai`i jumped out to an early five point lead in the first half at the 14:38 mark, up 11-6, but the feisty Eagles came right back and erased their deficit with an 11-0 run to take a six point lead. FGCU never looked back with a 10 point lead at the half and ended up with a 20 point advantage over the 'Bows.
Hawai`i won the battle on the glass, with a 44-to-32 edge in rebounds, but were outscored in the paint 32-to-30. The Eagles committed just two turnovers in the game, which UH scored three points off of. However FGCU converted UH's 17 turnovers—11 of which came in the second half—into a total of 19 points.
The Eagles came into town as one of the most lethal 3-point shooting teams amongst the NCAA Division I teams, averaging 12.5 3-pointers made per game as a team. UH was able to hold FGCU below their average of 12.5 a game as they made just nine treys, but that was little consolation as the Eagles finished the game just one point under their season average of +21 points scoring margin.
Three Eagles scored in double figures—Nicoya Jackson, Sarah Hansen and Eglah Griffen all had solid games. Jackson had a game-high 19 points with three 3-pointers; Hansen added 15 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the floor; and Griffin drilled a game-high four 3-pointers for 12 points.
Hawai`i concludes their non-conference schedule against North Carolina State tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. The Wolfpack are undefeated in the tourney with wins over FGCU and Alorn State earlier today. The early game pits FGCU against Alcorn State at 12:00 p.m.
