HONOLULU—The University of Hawai`i women's basketball team (4-8) dropped a heartbreaking loss to UC Davis, 62-57 to conclude the 2011 Chevron Rainbow Wahine Shootout. Sophomore Kamilah Jackson posted her fifth straight double-double to pace the 'Bows with 11 points and 11 rebounds on Tuesday night at the Stan Sheriff Center in front of 1,539.

Jackson was 3-of-4 from the floor and 5-of-8 from the free-throw line. She also tied her career high with three assists in 29 minutes of action. Two other Rainbow Wahine also scored in double-digits—Breanna Arbuckle and Vicky Tagalicod both posted 10 points apiece. Arbuckle was just one rebound shy of a double-double, grabbing nine rebounds with three assists. Tagalicod had a team-high and personal season-high five assists with one steal.

It was a game of scoring runs that saw just one lead change with 1:59 left in the game. The 'Bows got off to a hot start in the first half, jumping out to a quick 20-3 lead, but the scrappy Aggies fought back going on an 11-0 run of their own to cut their deficit to just six points. The two teams traded a few baskets before UH went on an 8-0 run to go up by 14 points, 30-16. But the Aggies closed the half on a 10-2 run of their own to go into the break down by six, 32-26.

In the second half, the 'Bows again spurted ahead, starting scoring six straight points on a pair of layups by Jackson and another by Arbuckle. By the 15:54 mark, the 'Bows had built a 13 point lead on a 3-pointer by Campanero, but then UC Davis started to whittle away at UH's lead. The Aggies went on another sustained run, outscoring UH 16-to-7 to tie the game at 50-50 with 8:43 left in the game. Later, the game was tied for the third time with 1:59 on a Blair Shinoda free-throw. Her second free-throw gave UCD the lead for good as the Aggies finished the game on a 7-0 run to down the Rainbow Wahine, 62-57.

As a team, UH dominated on the glass, out-rebounding UC Davis 41-to-29 and won the battle in the paint, 30-to-22. But, the Aggies were able to score 16 points off UH's 19 turnovers off of their pressure defense and UCD's bench outscored Hawai`i's, 23-to-9. After averaging a .696 free-throw percentage and shooting over .580 in all but one game, the 'Bows backtracked tonight, sinking just 10-of-22 foul shots. Hawai`i actually handled the Aggies defense fairly well, giving up just two turnovers through the first 10 minutes of the second half, but then four successive giveaways with less than four minutes left in the game marked the demise of the game. The loss snapped UH's three-game win streak--its longest of the year.

Three teams--Portland State, Hawai'i, and UC Davis all finished the tournament tied with identical 2-1 records. UC Davis captured the 2011 Chevron Rainbow Wahine Shootout by virtue of least points allowed (176) in the three games.

The Rainbow Wahine end their non-conference schedule with the Pepsi Rainbow Wahine Invitational, Dec. 28-30. Hawai`i will battle Alcorn State, Florida Gulf Coast and North Carolina State to close out the year.
