WEST POINT, N.Y.—The University of Hawai`i women's basketball team (1-7) fell just short at Army, 55-51 on Thursday night in the Christl Arena at West Point. The 'Bows were led by sophomore forward Kamilah Jackson and freshman point guard Alissa Campanero who both had a team-high 15 points with Breanna Arbuckle grabbing a season-high 13 rebounds in the loss.

Jackson also grabbed 13 rebounds to record her third double-double of the 2011-12 season and 15th of her young career. She went 5-of-11 from the floor—including a three-point shot—while grabbing two offensive and nine defensive boards. For Campanero, the 15 points marked a career-high for the rookie. She was also 5-of-11 in field goals but also sunk a pair of three-pointers and was 2-of-2 from the charity stripe. Campanero also chipped in four rebounds, two steals and an assist. Arbuckle also had chipped in two points, an assist and a season-high four blocked shots.

The Rainbow Wahine came out a little sluggish out of the gate, falling behind early 9-3 in the first half. But the 'Bows roared back, eventually taking the lead, 10-9 at the 12 minute mark. UH built as much as a seven point lead three times over the Black Knights and ended the first half with a 27-20 lead.

But in the second half, Army came out firing on all cylinders, making UH's seven point lead at the half evaporate in less than five minutes on a 14-to-7 run with Army's Jen Hazlett scoring eight of her points in those five minutes. The 'Bows fell behind by as many as four points, but battled back to tie the game three separate times. With 3:45 left in the game, Campanero hit a three-point shot to recapture the lead for Hawai`i at 48-47. But that lead would be short-lived as Army came right back to build another three point lead on a freethrow and a Hazlett layup. UH's Kanisha Bello came through with a layup with 1:27 left cut UH's deficit to one point, but Army's Liz Benedict sealed the win by hitting a pair of free-throws. Hazlett hit another free-throw in the closing seconds for the final four point win, 55-51.

The Black Knights' Hazlett terrorized the 'Bows scoring all 19 of her points in the second half to lead Army to the win. Molly Yardley also did well, sinking 12 of her 16 points in the second stanza.

Overall, it was a fairly even battle between Hawai`i and Army across the board. The two teams were tied 20-to-20 in points in the paint; tied with 40 rebounds a piece; and each team had 10 points each off turnovers. But the difference that proved costly for the 'Bows was free-throw shooting. UH as a team had been good this season averaging 74.2% from the free-throw line. But in tonight's game, UH shot just 8-for-18 for 44.4% while Army sunk 73.3% on 11-of-15 shooting from the stripe.

The 4,690 miles from Honolulu to West Point is the farthest distance the program has ever travelled for a game. The loss was the Rainbow Wahine's seventh straight and the team is still looking for its first victory over a DI opponent. Hawai`i's concludes its East Coast swing at Columbia on Saturday, Dec. 3 at 7:00 p.m.
