Women's Basketball

Hawai`i Falls to No. 18 DePaul, 90-65

Box Score HONOLULU—The University of Hawai`i women's basketball team (1-3) played hard until the end but fell to No. 18 DePaul, 90-65 in the final game of the Jack in the Box Rainobow Wahine Classic. Sophomore forward Kamilah Jackson earned all tournament honors and scored a season-high 19 points and was tied for a game-high 12 rebounds at the Stan Sheriff Center on Sunday night.

For Jackson, it marked her second double-double of the young season and her 15th of her career. She was 7-of-13 from the floor and 5-of-8 from the free-throw line. She also dished out three assists and had a blocked shot on the night. Senior guard Breanna Arbuckle added a season-high 16 points on 5-of-14 shooting—including one three pointer. She grabbed eight rebounds and blocked two shots in the game. Sophomore guard Kanisha Bello chipped in nine points, two steals and an assist while freshman guard Alissa Campanero distributed a team-high four assists with seven points and four rebounds.

The Rainbow Wahine kept the game close in the first half, tying the game at 13-13 with 11 minutes left. But after that, the Blue Demons took the lead and never looked back. The first half ended with DePaul leading 42-30, but UH came out aggressive in the second half and cut the lead to eight points five different times. But almost halfway through the second half, DePaul started to pull away, going on a 17-to-4 run. DePaul's balanced offence sunk 11 3-point shots and 19 shots in the paint to score just over their early season average of 89.0 points per game.

Even though it was a 25 point loss, Hawai`i battled throughout the game and never gave up. The 'Bows were able to pound in the paint, scoring 32 points inside the key to DePaul's 38. But where the Blue Demons hurt UH was most was in turning the 'Bows' 21 turnovers into 32 points, while UH was able to convert DePaul's 14 turnovers to just six points. UH fought valiantly with a thin bench, but were no match for the powerful Blue Demons who outscored UH's bench 40-to-6.

On a positive note, Hawai`i shot 70% from the free-throw line and improved their field-goal percentage by 15 % from its last game, shooting 41.1% on the night (23-for-56).

DePaul had four players in double digits, led by Anna Martin led all scorers with 22 points on 7-of-11 shooting—including 5-of-7 from beyond the arch. Megan Rogowski came off the bench to score 17 points while Kelsey Reynolds posted 11 and Katherine Harry had a double-double with 10 points and 12 boards.

There was a three-way tie for the tournament champions with DePaul, Portland and San Diego State all finishing with a 2-1 record. But San Diego State was determined the winner as they allowed just 177 points in their three  tourney games.

Next up for the Rainbow Wahine is the Waikiki Beach Marriott Rainbow Wahine Showdown this Thanksgiving weekend. Coming to Honolulu will be California, Texas and Virginia for the three-day tournament, Nov. 25-27.
