Portland Pulls Away from Hawai`i, 82-64

HONOLULU—The University of Hawai`i women's basketball team (1-1) fell to Portland, 84-62 on the opening night of the Jack in the Box Rainbow Wahine Classic. Sophomore forward Kamilah Jackson and senior guard Breanna Arbuckle led UH with 14 points a piece in the loss at the Stan Sheriff Center on Friday night.
 
Jackson went 5-of-6 from the floor and hit 4-of-6 from the free-throw line and grabbed eight rebounds. Arbuckle shot 6-of-8 in field goals and added two free throws, four rebounds and tying her career high with five assists. Sophomore guard Sydney Haydel also scored in double-digits, tallying 10 points in the loss with two assists and two rebounds.
 
The 'Bows kept it close at the half, closing to within 36-32 on the scoreboard. Jackson led UH with eight points and six rebounds at the break. Hawai`i trailed by eight with 1:28 to go in the half, but Jackson hit a layup on a nice feed from Arbuckle. UH then cut their deficit to four after Jazmine Ray sunk a pair of free-throws after getting fouled on a drive to the basket with seven seconds left on the clock.
 
But in the second half, Portland pulled away from UH, outscoring the 'Bows 46-32. The Pilots outscored the 'Bows in the paint, 30-to-24 as well as in points off the bench, 26-to-19. The Pilots also converted UH's 18 turnovers into 21 points, to UH's six points off of Portland's turnovers.  As a team, Portland had 27 more shots than UH, going 32-of-67 from the floor for a 47.8 field goal percentage, while UH shot 50% on 20-of-40 shooting on the night. Hawai`i was also out-rebounded with the Pilots corralling 38 boards to UH's 26.
 
The Rainbow Wahine Classic continues on Saturday with DePaul facing Portland at 12:00 p.m., followed by UH against San Diego State at 2:00 p.m.
