Game Notes
FRESNO, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i women's soccer team heads to Fresno, Calif., for the 2011 Western Athletic Conference Tournament, Nov. 3,4 and 6. The No. 3 seed Rainbow Wahine will face No. 6 seed New Mexico State in a first-round match-up on Thursday, Nov. 3 at 2:30 p.m. PT (12:30 p.m. HT).
This will be the second time in less than a week in which the teams will face each other. The Rainbow Wahine (5-11-1, 4-2-1 WAC) dropped a tough 1-0 decision to the Aggies (9-7-3, 2-3-2) in a highly contentious regular-season meeting on Friday in Las Cruces. Now the team's meet again for the first-time ever in the WAC Tournament. The winner of that match will take on host and No. 2 seed Fresno State in the semifinals.
UH enters the tournament with the momentum of a dramatic 1-0 overtime win at Louisiana Tech in Sunday's regular-season finale. That win gave UH its first road win of the season and clinched a third-place WAC finish for the Bows, who were the projected to finish 7
th in the coaches' preseason poll. It is the team's highest finish since 2008 as the Rainbow Wahine will compete in the conference tournament after a two-year hiatus.
The Rainbow Wahine have won one WAC Tournament title (2007) and are 4-7-1 (.375) in nine all-time appearances. This will be UH's swan song in the conference as UH will join the Big West in women's soccer in 2012.
