Kua Captures Kauai Invite Title; Warriors Finish Runner-Up

Final Results

LIHU'E, Kaua'i – University of Hawai'i men's golfer T.J. Kua claimed his first career collegiate tournament title by winning the Kaua'i Collegiate Invitational by seven strokes Tuesday, at the Puakea Golf Course.
 
The Kaua'i native shot a career-low, 6-under 66 during the third and final round of competition to put him at 14-under (69-67-66=202) for the tournament. In four career Kaua'i Invitationals, Kua finished 15th as a freshman, fifth as a sophomore, and third last season as a junior.
 
As a team, UH went into the final round with a seven stroke lead over the College of Charleston and was on the verge of capturing its first title since winning the Naris Cup in Okayama, Japan in March 2009. However, the Warriors were overtaken by three-time defending champion San Diego, who shot a blistering 270 on Tuesday, and fell by one stroke.
 
The Toreros started the day in third place and 13 strokes behind UH. USD rallied in the final round with three players shooting in the 60s to finish the tournament at 14-under (296-284-270=850). Hawai'i shot 284 on Tuesday and finished at 851(285-282-284).
 
Rounding out the field were the College of Charleston (289-285-289=863), Utah Valley (300-291-288=879), Seattle (296-299-297=892), and North Dakota State (308-293-302=903).
 
Also competing for UH were Kaua'i native, junior Cory Oride (71-70-73=214/t6th), sophomore Tommy Yamashita (73-73-72=218/t10th), junior Henry Park (72-77-72=222/19th), and Michael Koeneke (75-72-76=223/t20th).
 
Competing as an individual was sophomore Nainoa Calip (70-69-73/4th), who entered the final round in second place behind Kua, finished with his first career Top 10 finish. Also competing as individuals were freshman Brian Lee (77-70-78=225/t23rd), sophomore David Saka (75-75-81=231/t34th), junior Alex Chu (78-78-78=234/t38th), senior Jared Sawada (83-72-80=235/40th), and freshman Ryan Kuroiwa (77-76-86).
 
The Warriors will tee it up again in January when they kick-off the spring season with the Battle at Waikoloa.
