Women’s Soccer Claims Overtime Win

Box Score

RUSTON, La. – The University of Hawaii women's soccer team won its final Western Athletic Conference regular season match in dramatic fashion with a 1-0 overtime victory over Louisiana Tech Sunday afternoon. Skye Shimabukuro's penalty kick in the 98th minute proved the game-winner.

The Rainbow Wahine (5-11-1, 4-2-1 WAC), who enter the Big West next year, finished their final WAC season in third place, their highest finish since 2008.  The win was UH's first of the season on the mainland and ended a school-record slide of 11 straight away loses dating back to last season.

Louisiana Tech (8-8-4, 1-6 WAC) finished with advantages of 13-7 in shots and 8-3 in shots-on-goal but it was the Rainbow Wahine who would have the last word. Freshman Tiana Fujimoto was fouled in the box in the first overtime period and Shimabukuro made good on the ensuing  penalty kick to secure UH's second overtime win in WAC play this year.

Kanani Taaca, who has been a stalwart in goal all season, tied her season high with eight saves, including seven after halftime.

UH now heads to Fresno, Calif., for the 2011 WAC Tournament, Nov. 3, 4 and 6. UH enters the tournament as the No. 3 seed and will face No. 6 New Mexico State in the first-round on Thursday, Nov. 3. The Aggies defeated UH 1-0 in Las Cruces on Oct. 28.
