Game Notes
The University of Hawai'i women's soccer team enters the final week of the Western Athletic Conference regular-season in the thick of the championship race. The Rainbow Wahine are currently in a tie for second place and conclude their schedule with a pair of road matches.
UH (4-10-1, 3-1-1 WAC) will face New Mexico State (8-7-3, 1-3-2 WAC) on Friday, Oct. 28 at 7:00 p.m. MT (3:00 p.m. HT) then travel to Louisiana Tech (8-7-4, 1-5 WAC) for its WAC finale on Sunday, Oct. 30 at 1:00 p.m. CT (8:00 a.m. HT).
The Rainbow Wahine were idle this past weekend yet wrapped up a spot in the next month's WAC Tournament following league results over the weekend. Now the team has its sights on a bigger prize. UH has 10 points, putting them in a tie with Fresno State and San Jose State and just two points behind first-place Utah State. The Rainbow Wahine do not control their own destiny in the hunt for their first WAC title since 2007, but they do in maintaining a second-place standing and an all-important first-round bye in the WAC Tournament.
Its been a remarkable turnaround for UH, which started the season 1-8 and are now in WAC championship contention despite failing to even qualify for the conference tournament the last two seasons. This week's matches, however, will provide a challenge for UH. The Rainbow Wahine will be well rested but will need to shake off the rust of nearly two weeks without game action. UH also faces the bigger burden of winning on the road. The Rainbow Wahine are 0-7 on the mainland this season and have dropped a school-record 10 straight away from home dating back to last season.
