WAIPAHU, O'ahu – The University of Hawai'i women's soccer team battled San Jose State to 1-1 double-overtime tie in its home finale Sunday at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium. With the result, the Rainbow Wahine (4-10, 3-1-1 WAC) continued to hold its top spot in the Western Athletic Conference with 10 points.
In a heated and physical match throughout, the Rainbow Wahine gave up an early score to the Spartans but responded in the second half with a goal of its own to earn the hard-earned draw.
San Jose State (3-10-1, 1-1-1 WAC) wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard as midfielder Lauren Sanchez gathered a ball from 25 yards out and sent a line drive between the left post and a sprawling
Kanani Taaca.
That score held for the next 65-plus minutes, until UH struck on a long free kick in the 69
th minute.
Alyssa Simbahon launched the ball from 40 yards out into a crowded box, clearing a mass of players and bouncing over the outstretched reach of Meghan Maiwald.
The teams would play into double-overtime, but neither team could break the tie. UH held a slight advantage in shots, 13-11, including 7-5 in shots on goal.
Simbahon,
Colleen Burns,
Tiffany Ikeda-Simao,
Keisha Kanekoa,
Kaylee Kihara and
Brittani Lum, were honored following the match as part of Senior Night festivities.
Lauren Ho, who was denied a year eligibility by the NCAA and could not suit up for the Rainbow Wahine this year, was also honored.
The Rainbow Wahine will now have a nearly two-week break before concluding the regular season on the road against New Mexico State (Oct. 28) and Louisiana Tech (Oct. 30).
