Women’s Soccer Blanks Fresno State, 3-0

Box Score

WAIPAHU, O'ahu – The University of Hawai'i soccer team continued its home mastery in league play with an emphatic 3-0 win over Fresno State Friday night at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium. With the win UH (4-10) moved into sole possession of first place in the Western Athletic Conference with a 3-1 mark.

UH got a first-half goal by junior Skye Shimabukuro then tacked on second-half insurance goals by McKenzie McGoldrick and Crystal Fresquez—the first career goals by the pair. The Rainbow Wahine won for the third time in as many WAC home matches, outscoring its opponents 10-1 in that stretch.  In the process, the Rainbow Wahine also took a strong step in solidifying a spot in next month's WAC Tournament.

Shimabukuro got UH on the board first in the 30th minute. Shimabukuro received a ball in the box from Krystal Pascau, cutback to evade a Fresno State defender then sent a low-line heater in the far corner of the net.  UH scored on a short-handed Fresno State (8-4-3, 2-1 WAC) squad, who declined to substitute for an injured player less than five minutes earlier.

Fresno State generated opportunities of is own in the first half, including a shot that went off the cross bar in the 10th minute and an open-net shot that was cleared by a UH defender at the last moment in the 40th minute.

Those misses would come back to haunt the Bulldogs in the second half when UH put the match away. McGoldrick made it 2-0 on a beautiful shot in the 73rd minute. Fresquez sent a long ball to Pascua who headed the ball forward to McGoldrick. The forward one-timed the ball off the bounce and over the charging Fresno State goalkeeper Katie DeVault for an open-net goal.

Fresquez capped the scoring in the 85th minute when she took a through ball from Kaylee Kihara on the right side of the box and hit a close range shot for her first career goal.

The Rainbow Wahine will next host its final home match of the season when it faces San Jose State on Sunday, Oct. 16 at 5:00 p.m. UH's six seniors will be honored following the match as part of Senior Night festivities.
