Terry Albritton Memorial Meet Results

Final Results

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i women's track and field team hosted the Terry Albritton Memorial Meet, Friday and Saturday at the Clarence T.C. Ching Field. The competition was part of the track and field program's Sunset Series.

Two facility records and eight meet records were set over the weekend. Pacific Athletics' (Canada) Margaret Hanlon broke the 60-meter dash record, previously held by UH's Tasha Monroe, with a time of 7.74 seconds. Monroe's old mark of 7.88 seconds was set in 2005.

Sweden's Angelica Bengtsson, who competes for Hasselby SK club, tied the pole vault mark of 13-6.25 (4.12m), which was set by University of Idaho's Melinda Owen during the 2006 WAC Outdoor Championships.

This year's Terry Albritton Memorial has special meaning as several weeks ago, Albritton was posthumously inducted into the school's Sports Circle of Honor. Albritton was the late UH track star who broke the world record in the shot put (71 feet, 8 1/2 inches) at an all-comers meet at Cooke Field while a junior at UH in 1976. Later that year, he won the NCAA title.

Albritton enrolled in Stanford in 1973 on a football scholarship and also competed in track, where he was second in the shot put in the Pac-8 in 1974. He transferred to Hawai'i in 1975 and was the NCAA runner-up that year. When UH dropped the men's track and field program after his world record breaking season, he transferred back to Stanford, where he won the 1977 NCAA shot put title.

Following his competitive career, Albritton served as strength coach at UH from 1979-85, and is regarded as a pioneer in plyometrics and other fast-twitch muscle training techniques. Albritton died in Cambodia in 2004 at the age of 50.

UH's future Sunset Series meets include Mini Meet #3 (March 20), Mini Meet #4 (March 27), Mini Meet #5 (April 10), Mini Meet #6 (April 17), and Sunset Finale (April 30-May 1).
