HONOLULU—The University of Hawai`i women's basketball team (6-6) held off CSU Bakersfield (9-9), 84-74. Freshman
Kamilah Jackson had one of best individual efforts in Rainbow Wahine history, posting her seventh double-double, setting new career-highs with 31 points and 25 rebounds, while
Keisha Kanekoa scored 22 points to become just the 16th Rainbow Wahine in UH history to score over 1,000 points.
Jackson's offensive effort of 31 points broke former UH great Judy Mosely's freshman single-game scoring record of 30 points set against San Diego State on Jan. 20, 1987. She was 11-of-18 from the field and added two assists in a season-high 38 minutes of action. Jackson also ended up just one rebound shy of the Hawai`i single-game record of 26 set by Renee McKnight vs. Utah State on Dec. 19, 1978. Jackson tied recent UH alum, Tanya Smith's Stan Sheriff Center single-game record of 25 rebounds set on Jan. 26, 2008 against Idaho. Jackson had 12 offensive and 13 defensive rebounds to lead UH to the win.
Jackson had already posted a double-double in the first half alone with 21 points and 14 rebounds while playing all 20 minutes.
Kanekoa scored six of UH's first eight points before she had to leave the game briefly after taking a charge under the CSUB basket. She came on strong in the second half though, scoring 16 of her 22 points after the break. Kanekoa was 6-of-10 from the floor and 10-of-11 from the free-throw line. She is the first Rainbow Wahine to break the 1,000 point milestone since Janevia Taylor did so in her senior year of 2007.
Also having a strong game was freshman
Shawna-Lei Kuehu who scored 13 points and filled the stat line with six rebounds, four assists, four steals and two blocked shots.
Breanna Arbuckle was the iron-lady for the team, battling all 40 minutes in the paint for the 'Bows. She scored four points, grabbed eight rebounds and blocked three shots.
For the second game in a row, the 'Bows had a decisive advantage in rebounds and scoring in the paint. On the boards, UH out-rebounded CSUB 57-35 while outscoring the Roadrunners in the paint, 48-22. UH also had a 21-9 edge in second chance points. The 'Bows' 84 points was their highest point total this season, improving upon their 82 points scored against North Carolina Central on Nov. 26.
The Roadrunners had four players hit for double-figures, led by Kristine Herman 16 points with four three-pointers. Tyonna Outland had 15 points, Tamiko Davis tallied 14 points, and Britney McGee logged 13 points. In all, CSUB sunk 12-of-26 3-pointers in the loss.
Hawai`i avenged last year's 30-point loss at CSU Bakersfield, where the 'Bows fell 105-75 on Nov. 21, 2009.
The Rainbow Wahine concludes the Pepsi Rainbow Wahine Invitational and their non-conference portion of their schedule on Thursday against UNLV at 7:00 p.m. The early game features Columbia vs. CSU Bakersfield at 5:00 p.m.
