UH Pair Finish In Top Four At HPU Invite

KA'A'AWA, O'ahu – The University of Hawai'i women's cross country team opened the 2009 season with a third place finish at the Hawai'i Pacific Invitational Saturday at Kualoa Ranch. Individually, Rainbow Wahine newcomer Jessica Forrester and senior Mariana Monasi placed second and fourth, respectively.  
 
Forrester, a transfer from the University of Tampa, where she was a Division II All-American, concluded the 5K race in 18:05, just seven seconds behind winner Theresia Schnurr of the Alaska-Fairbanks. Monasi, UH's top returning runner, crossed the finish line in 18:41.
 
BYU-Hawai'i captured the team title with 49 points followed by Humboldt State (52), Hawai'i (77), Alaska-Fairbanks (86), HPU (100), UH-Hilo (144), and Chaminade (220).
 
UH's Tava Tedesco placed 12th overall in 19:15, while Gina Nourmohamadian (20:05, 22nd) and Shelby Yoakum (21:03, 31st) also contributed to the team's point total.
 
The HPU Invite was the first of seven regular season meets for the Rainbow Wahine this season. Up next is the Big Wave Invitational, which UH will host at the Kane'ohe Klipper Golf Course, Sept. 19.
