WAIPAHU, O'ahu – The University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine soccer team (1-2-1) fell to the UAB Blazers (5-0-0) 2-0 in the first match of the Outrigger Hotels and Resorts Soccer Classic at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium Friday.
The Rainbow Wahine out-shot UAB 13-7, with
Britta Bourne and
Ambree Ako leading with five and four shots, respectively. Bourne also put three shots on goal.
UAB opened the scoring in the 28th minute as Allison Young put in the first goal on a low cross from Laura McCalla. Hawai'i looked to answer, taking eight shots with three on goal in the first half.
But despite all their chances, the Rainbow Wahine couldn't get on the board. The Blazers then put it away in the 88th minute as Emma Smith stole a ball deep in UH's territory and scored on a low shot, capping the 2-0 victory.
The classic continues tomorrow as UAB face Pacific at 7 p.m. at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium. UH will then close out the classic against Pacific on Sunday, Sept. 6, at 5 p.m.
