WAIPAHU, O'ahu – The University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine soccer team (4-6-1) defeated Detroit-Mercy (2-7-1) 2-0 in OHANA Hotels and Resorts Shootout at Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium Saturday.
Ambree Ako and
Britta Bourne both led the way offensively, with each posting a goal and an assist.
Colleen Burns chipped in two assists for the Rainbow Wahine, who had a 7-2 advantage in shots on goal and a 16-4 advantage in overall shots.
The Rainbow Wahine opened the scoring in the 17th minute. Burns passed to Bourne at midfield, who flicked the ball ahead to Ako for a breakaway goal past the goalie to the lower left corner.
UH then put it away in the 49th minute as Burns sent a long pass to Ako, who crossed the ball to Bourne for the shot, through the goalies' legs.
Kanani Taaca played all 90 minutes to post her second-straight shutout. She had two saves.
Hawai'i will now start Western Athletic Conference play on Friday, Oct. 2, at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium, hosting San Jose State at 7 p.m. The Rainbow Wahine will then face Fresno State at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 4.
