No. 4 Rainbow Wahine Cruise Past No. 25 Pepperdine

HONOLULU – The fourth-ranked University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team swept No. 25 Pepperdine for the second straight night at the Stan Sheriff Center Saturday, 25-17, 25-17, 25-17 in front of 6,108 fans.
 
The Rainbow Wahine improve to 9-2 on the season and completed non-conference play with a No. 4 ranking. UH begins Western Athletic Conference play Thursday night against Boise State at the Stan Sheriff Center.
 
Offensively against the Waves Saturday night, Kanani Danielson had 11 kills and added six digs, while Stephanie Ferrell had 10 kills in the win.
 
Dani Mafua set the balanced attack with 33 assists and Aneli Cubi-Otineru added nine kills, 12 digs and two aces. Amber Kaufman had six kills and three aces and Elizabeth Ka'aihue had 14 digs.
 
In the opening set, UH went back-and-forth with Pepperdine, before opening up an 18-15 lead, and carrying it into a 25-17 victory. Cubi-Otineru had seven kills, hit .385 and had three digs in the set. Danielson and Kaufman each had three kills and Ferrell added two kills in the set. As a team UH hit .333, while holding Pepperdine to a .194 hitting percentage.
 
The Rainbow Wahine jumped out to a 6-1 lead to open the second set and went on to win 25-17. Ferrell had four kills in the set, while Kaufman, Danielson and Cubi-Otineru each had two kills. Mafua set the offense to a balanced attack, and had 10 assists. The UH defense had four blocks in the set and held Pepperdine to a .088 hitting percentage.
 
UH once again took an early lead in the third set and won 25-17 for the third straight set. Danielson had six kills and Ferrell had four kills in the set. Alexis Forsythe came off the bench to record three kills.
 
The Rainbow Wahine open Western Athletic Conference play Thursday, Sept. 24 at the Stan Sheriff Center against Boise State at 7 p.m. UH will face Idaho on Saturday, Sept. 26 at 7 p.m. to conclude its 13-match homestand to start the season.
