Women's Volleyball Returns Home to Face San Jose State

HONOLULU — The University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team brings a four-match winning streak back to Manoa for a Mountain West Conference series with San Jose State this weekend at Bankoh Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.
 
The Rainbow Wahine (12-3, 4-0 Mountain West) and Spartans (6-8, 1-3) meet on Friday, Oct. 9 and Saturday, Oct. 10. Both matches are set for 7 p.m.
 
The 'Bows enter the week tied with UC Davis atop the Mountain West standings and are coming off a series sweep at Grand Canyon. UH has won 11 of its last 12 matches, the last four coming in straight sets.

Saturday (Oct. 10): Da Kine Series — Filipino Night 

  • First Hawaiian Bank sponsors Filipino Night with fantastic prizes up for grabs throughout the match! This marks another chapter in Da Kine Series, where UH Athletics proudly showcases the unique melting pot of cultures that make Hawai'i special. As part of Filipino American History Month in October, we're shining a spotlight on the rich histories, cultures, and contributions of the Filipino community in Hawaiʻi. Portions of the match will be announced in Filipino courtesy of the UH Center for Philippine Studies and Ilokano and Filipino programs in recognition of this special month. 
  • Following Saturday's match, the Rainbow Wahine Volleyball team will host an autograph session located near Gate B.  

'BOWS NOTES
  • UH's 12-3 start marks program's best record over the first 15 matches since going 13-2 to open the 2019 season.
  • The 'Bows' streak of four consecutive sweeps is their longest since a run of four straight in October 2023.
  • UH has eight sweeps this season after posting five last year and eight in 2024.
  • UH ranks first in the Mountain West and seventh nationally in opponent hitting percentage at .151. UH has held opponents under .200 in 12 matches this season, including the last nine in a row.
  • Middle blocker Miliana Sylvester hit .500 and averaged 3.17 kills per set in last week's series at Grand Canyon. The junior leads the team and ranks seventh in the Mountain West in hitting percentage at .335, and is hitting .375 in conference matches.
  • Sylvester also moved into the conference lead with 1.13 blocks per set. She had nine blocks (1.50 per set) in last weekend's series.
  • Outside hitter Panna Ratkai continues to lead UH and ranks third in the Mountain West with 3.49 kills per set. The senior leads also ranks second in the conference in aces (25 total, 0.45 per set), and points (226.5, 4.12 per set).
  • Libero Victoria Leyva averaged 4.67 digs per set in the series at GCU and ranks second in the Mountain West with 4.04 digs per set this season. The junior has double-digit digs in each of the last six matches.
  • Setter Adrianna Arquette ranks second in the Mountain West and ranks 68th in NCAA Division I with 9.63 assists per set.
  • Freshman middle blocker Rachel Purser continues her efficient start to her college career. Purser ranks second on the team hitting percentage at .322.
  • Outside hitter Tali Hakas ranks second on the team with 143 total kills and 2.60 per set. Hakas had 14 kills on .387 in the series finale at Grand Canyon.
  • Sophomore Cha'lei Reid has started the last four matches at opposite after sitting out the previous eight matches due to a shoulder injury.
  • Freshman defensive specialist Cameron Holcomb provided a spark in conference play with eight aces and 31 digs (2.58 per set) over the last four matches.
     
THE MATCHUP
San Jose State Spartans
Series Record: UH, 67-5
Streak: SJSU won 1
Last Meeting: SJSU, 3-2, Sept. 4, 2025, Honolulu
  • The series between Rainbow Wahine and Spartans dates back to Nov. 1, 1975, and is the second longest series in UH's program history.
  • UH's 67 wins against the Spartans is the most against an opponent.
  • SJSU ended UH's 42-match winning streak in the series with a five-set victory in last season's OUTRIGGER Invitational in Honolulu. The win was SJSU's first against UH since 1993.
  • In last year's meeting, UH rallied from two sets down to force a fifth and led 12-9 in the decisive set. SJSU closed on a 6-1 run in a 25-23, 26-24, 19-25, 13-25, 15-13 decision.
  • SJSU head coach Todd Kress is in his fourth year and has a record of 46-50 with the Spartans. Kress has an overall record of 563-364 in a 31-season career.
  • SJSU split a series at Wyoming last week, winning the opener in four sets and dropping the rematch.
  • Morgan Graves leads the Spartans with 115 kills and 2.61 kills per set.
  • Devon DeNecochea is hitting a team-best .303.
  • Zuzana Kosikova ranks third in the Mountain West with 22 aces and 0.42 per set.
