NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – Despite outshooting the Matadors 29-8, including a 12-5 edge in shots on goal, the University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine soccer team (1-6-1) fell to Cal State Northridge (4-5-0) 1-0 at Matador Soccer Field Friday.
The Rainbow Wahine came out firing in the first 15 minutes, taking the first six shots of the match, including three on goal. But CSUN turned it around, scoring the lone goal at the 15:41 mark, as Farryn Townley scored on a long cross by Niki Connolly. UH would take five more shots on goal in the half, but couldn't find the net.
Hawai'i continued to keep the pressure on in the second half, taking 14 shots. The Rainbow Wahine had some good opportunities late in the match as Ako took a shot that hit the post with just over a minute left to play. On the rebound, Punzal took a couple more shots. The first was blocked, with the final shot being saved by CSUN goalie Kellie Drenner, her 12th save of the night.
UH concludes its road trip on Sunday, Sept. 20, at Cal State Bakersfield, at 7 p.m.
