Baseball team lines up to congratulate Greg Garcia

'Bows Break Home Run Record, Sweep Doubleheader At Fresno State

FRESNO, Calif. – The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (29-22, 11-12 WAC) swept a doubleheader from the Fresno State Bulldogs (24-27, 8-12), 15-10 and 15-6, Saturday. In the process, UH also hit five homers in the doubleheader, giving the 'Bows 60 in the season to break the program record of 58, set in 1983.
 
The Rainbows won the first game 15-10. Nate Klein (2-3) pitched 8.0 innings, allowing five earned runs to get the win while Cody Kendall (2-1) got the loss for Fresno State.
 
Greg Garcia, Kevin Macdonald and Sean Montplaisir all homered for the Rainbows in game one. Macdonald ended up 3-for-3 with four runs, two RBI and a double while hitting his 14th home run of the season. Garcia was 3-for-6 with three RBI and three runs. Montplaisir ended up 3-for-5 with five RBI and two doubles to go with his home run.
 
Matt Roquemore went 4-for-6 with one RBI, while Ryan Morford went 3-for-6 with two doubles and three runs. Vinnie Catricala added a 2-for-4 game with one RBI and two runs while Christian Johnson was 2-for-5 with a double and a run. Kolten Wong posted three RBI for UH as well.
 
The Rainbows got on the board early, starting off the game with three-straight singles, the third a RBI-single by Catricala. Wong later drove in another run in the top of the first, getting UH's lead to 2-0.
 
The Bulldogs put up an unearned run in the bottom of the third before UH started to create some distance. In the top of the fourth, the 'Bows put up five runs, including a RBI-single by Garcia and a two-run double by Montplaisir, getting the lead to 7-1.
 
Fresno State added a run in the bottom of the fourth and then got back into the game with a four-run inning, getting it back to 7-6.
 
But Hawai`i again pulled away with big sixth and seventh innings. Wong, Montplaisir and Roquemore each drove in a run in the sixth before Garcia blasted a two-run home run, followed by a solo homer by Macdonald, getting the score to 13-6.
 
The Bulldogs added a run in the bottom of seventh before Montplaisir came up with the record-tying 58th team home run in the top of the ninth, making it 15-7. Fresno State added three in the bottom of the ninth, making the final 15-10.
 
In the second game, UH beat Fresno State 15-6 in a seven-inning game. Jared Alexander (3-1) picked up the win for the'Bows while Jayson Kramer got the save. Holden Sprague (5-3) took the loss for the Bulldogs.
 
Wong led the way for UH in the second game, going 3-for-5 with three RBI, two runs and two doubles. Morford added a 2-for-3 game with a home run, two RBI and three runs while Johnson was 2-for-5 with a home run, a double and three RBI. Matt Roquemore was 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs while Garcia went 2-for-4 with a triple, three runs and two RBI. Montplaisir continued his hot play on the trip, going 2-for-2 with one RBI, one double and two runs.
 
Hawai`i jumped out to a 3-0 in the top of the first inning as Wong hit a two-run double before coming in to score on a RBI-double by Montplaisir. Fresno State responded in the bottom half of the inning, scoring two unearned runs to cut it back to 3-2.
 
UH got two more runs in the top of the second as Morford hit a two-run homer that broke the record and pushed the lead to 5-2.
 
Fresno State again answered with another two-run inning in the bottom of the fourth, cutting it to 5-4. But Hawai`i came up big, scoring four runs, including three on a homer by Johnson, extending the 'Bows' lead to 9-4.
 
The Bulldogs put up a run in the bottom of the fifth and looked to do more damage, loading the bases with just one out. But Kramer entered the game and induced an inning-ending double play, keeping UH's lead at 9-5.
 
But Hawai`i then busted it open in the top of the seventh. Roquemore got the scoring started in the inning with a two-run single. Garcia added a two-run triple before Macdonald and Wong both added RBI-singles, capping a six-run inning that gave UH the 15-5 advantage.
 
Fresno State added an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh, making the final score 15-6.
 
UH will head home for a four-game, non-conference series vs. Utah Valley from May 14-17 at Les Murakami Stadium. The 'Bows will then host the WAC Tournament from May 21-24.
