Warrior Golf Wrap-Up 2008-09 Season

Notes

The University of Hawai'i men's golf team wrapped-up the 2008-09 season three weeks ago with a ninth place finish at the Western Athletic Conference Championship in Henderson, Nevada.

This season, the Warriors competed in ten tournaments, three of which they hosted.  Their best team performance came at the Turtle Bay Resort College Invitational in November 2008. In the O'ahu-based tournament, UH posted a three-round total 866 to tie for eighth place. Top finisher for the Warriors was junior Robert Berton who tied for sixth place at six-under par.

The Naris Cup in March 2009 was another highlight in the men's season. For the first time in Warrior golf history, the team travelled to Okayama, Japan to compete against six Japan-based teams as well as Hawai'i-Hilo. The Warriors fired rounds of 294, 305, and 312 to card a three-round 897 and win the tournament's team title.

Although the success of the season was a team effort, two Warriors stood out. Junior Robert Berton earned top individual in six of the ten tournaments in which UH competed. He shot the lowest 54-hole score (210) and earned the best finish (T6th) at the Turtle Bay Resort College Invitational. Berton was also ranked first on the team with an average of 73.29 strokes per round.

Freshman #T.J. Kua#, the four-time Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion, exceeded expectations by earning top individual in three tournaments, including the WAC Championship in which he tied for 22nd at 11-over par. Kua was ranked second on the team with an average of 74.10 strokes per round. His best finish came at the Turtle Bay Resort College Invitational where he tied for 14th at four-under par and posted a season-low round of 67.

The Warriors say goodbye to two seniors this season. Cody Pewarchuk competed in eight tournaments, the most in any season of his four-year collegiate career. He earned top individual at the Cougar Classic in April 2009 with a three-round 224 to tie for 48th place. He also shot the lowest round of any Warrior this season, a 66 at the Kaua'i Collegiate Invitational. In his four years on the team, Pewarchuk competed in a total of 23 tournaments, earning an average of 77.8 strokes per round. His best career finish came at the Hokulia Challenge in the 2007-08 season where he placed ninth.

Senior Chase Bingham also leaves the Warriors. Bingham competed in seven tournaments, again, the most in any season of his four-year collegiate career.  He shot his lowest 54-hole score (224) at the Turtle Bay Resort College Invitational and earned his best finish (68th) at the Kaua'i Collegiate Invitational. In his four years on the team, Bingham competed in a total of 14 tournaments to earn an average of 79.1 strokes per round.
