Day 3 Results
LOGAN, Utah – The University of Hawai'i track and field team picked up three more medals on the third day of the 2009 Western Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships Friday at Utah State's Ralph Maughan Stadium. With one day remaining in the competition, the Rainbow Wahine are in second place in the team standings with 54 points.
Nevada leads the competition with 62.5 points followed by UH, Louisiana Tech (28.5), Idaho (27), Utah State (26.5), Fresno State (26), Boise State (25.5), and New Mexico State (23).
After winning gold and bronze in the heptathlon on Thursday, UH added a gold in the pole vault, and silver and bronze in the javelin. With five medals thus far, Hawai'i is one medal shy of tying its all-time mark at a WAC Outdoor Championship.
Senior
Jessica Custance won UH's second gold medal of the meet with her performance in the pole vault. Competing in her final WAC Championship, Custance cleared 12-7.5 (3.85m). Teammate
Samantha Weaver scored four team points with her fourth place finish and jump of 12-1.5 (3.70m).
Multi-event athlete
Annett Wichmann added to her career WAC medal count with a silver in the javelin. One day after winning her record fourth heptathlon gold, Wichmann won her second career javelin medal with a throw of 158-10 (48.42m) and now has 12 career WAC medals. The Jena, Germany native also placed fifth in the shot put with a heave of 46-10.25 (14.28m). Wichmann will compete in two more events on Saturday – triple jump and high jump.
Freshman
Kai Schmidt won bronze in the javelin and became UH's eighth regional qualifier this season with a throw of 146-4 (44.62m). In the long jump, a pair of UH athletes placed in the top eight. Freshman
Jamilee Jimenez took fourth with a personal-best 18-6.5 (5.65m).
Emily Sheppard tied for eighth with jump of 17-9.75 (5.43m).
Sophomore
Careena Onosai and freshman
Lauren Cutler just missed out on scoring points in their events. Onosai heaved a personal best 42-9 (13.03m) in the shot put to finish ninth while Cutler threw the javelin 119-0 (36.28m).
In the 800-meter run prelims, UH's
Mariana Monasi and
Samantha Whitehall advanced to Saturday's eight-woman finals, which automatically assures the team of scoring points in the event.
The meet concludes on Saturday with 15 event finals. The Rainbow Wahine will field competitors in eight events.
