Wichmann Becomes Four-Time WAC Heptathlon Champion

LOGAN, Utah –University of Hawai'i's Annett Wichmann became the Western Athletic Conference's first four-time winner of the heptathlon after running away with the title at the conference's outdoor track and field championships.

The Jena, Germany native scored 5,450 points during the two-day competition which concluded Thursday at Utah State's Ralph Maughan Stadium.
 
Wichmann was never challenged during the seven-discipline event and added wins in the javelin (152-02/46.39m) and 800-meter run (2:26.35) along with a runner-up finish in the long jump (17-11/5.46m) on Thursday.

Wichmann earned her seventh gold medal in a WAC multi-event and added to her career total of 11 combined medals at both the indoor and outdoor championships.
 
Emily Sheppard captured the bronze with a score of 4,701 points, while Joy Saleapaga took 11th with a personal-best 3,961 points.
 
Sheppard got off to a great start on Thursday by winning the long jump with a leap of 18-2.5 (5.55m). However, she dropped to third after the javelin (60-2/18.35m) and could not catch Idaho's Darcy Collins in the 800-meters (2:33.09).
 
Saleapaga concluded her first career heptathlon at UH with a respectable showing. She finished with marks of 14-3.25 (4.35m) in the long jump, 109-7 (33.41m) in the javelin, and 2:36.61 in the 800-meters.
 
 In the team standings, UH leads with 16 points followed by Idaho (13), Nevada (5), New Mexico State (4) and Fresno State (1).
 
The first full day of competition of the WAC Championships begins on Friday.
