HONOLULU – The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (23-13, 6-4 WAC) split a doubleheader against Sacramento State Hornets (21-16, 2-5) 1-2 and 7-2 in front of a crowd of 3,978 at Les Murakami Stadium Saturday.
In the first game, the Rainbows fell 2-1.
Matt Sisto (4-3) took the complete-game loss, allowing just two runs while striking out seven. Jesse Darrah (7-2) got the win for the Hornets while Jeff Roth picked up the save.
Macdonald got the Rainbows going again, hitting a solo home run in the bottom of the second to give UH the 1-0 edge.
The Hornets came back to tie it with a run in the fourth, then took the lead after scoring a run in the top of the fifth, at 2-1.
In the second game, Hawai`i won 7-2.
Nate Klein (1-2) got the win, allowing just one run in 5.0 innings, striking out five. Brandon Sandoval (4-4) took the loss for the Hornets.
Catricala led the way for UH, going 3-for-3 with a home run, three RBI and two runs. Wong added a 2-for-2 game with one RBI and a double while
Christian Johnson had two RBI. Both
Greg Garcia and
Shane Hoey had two runs each.
Catricala opened the scoring, hitting a two-run homer to centerfield in the bottom of first.
After allowing a run in the top of the second, UH added to the lead as Wong and Johnson both drove in runs, getting it to 4-1.
Hawai`i extended the lead to 5-1 on an RBI-single by Catricala in the bottom of the fourth. Sacramento State got back a run in the top of the sixth before
Kevin Macdonald and Johnson added two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth, making the final 7-2.
The two teams close out the series tomorrow at 1:05 p.m. at Les Murakami Stadium.
