Wichmann eclipsed the NCAA provisional mark with 5,334 points and placed second at the Mt. SAC Relays Multi-Events while Sheppard set a new personal best by scoring 4,769 points at the California Invitational Multi-Events. That placed her fourth among the 38-athlete field and nearly 300 points more than her previous personal best.
Wichmann began the day with a sub-par performance in the long jump (17-0.75/5.20m) but blew away the field in the javelin, her best event, with a throw of 147-6 (44.96m). The Jena, Germany native placed sixth in the 800-meter run, clocking in at 2:22.01.
Her total of 5,334 points will likely earn her a spot to the NCAA Championships for the fourth consecutive year, which would make her for the first Rainbow Wahine in school history to accomplish that feat.
Olympian Sharon Day won the competition which included 17 athletes with a 5,823-point total.
Sheppard started the day with a third-place showing in the long jump with a leap of 18-5 (5.61m). In the javelin, she threw 80-7 (24.56m) but rebounded by knocking seven seconds off of her PR in the 800-meter (2:32.82).
During the two-day competition, Sheppard set seven PRs including a school heptathlon record in the 200-meter dash. UC Santa Barbara's Barbara Nwaba won the competition with 5,039 points followed by Adam's State's Amanda Gylling (4,853), and UC San Diego's Stephanie LeFever (4,829).
Over the next two days, the Rainbow Wahine will be competing in the Mt. SAC Relays, Bryan Clay Invitational and Beach Invitational throughout southern California.
