Wichmann, Sheppard Off To Strong Starts In Heptathlon

AZUSA, Calif. – University of Hawai'i track and field athletes Annett Wichmann and Emily Sheppard competed on the first day of their respective heptathlon competitions Wednesday in cold and windy conditions at Cougar Athletic Stadium on the campus of Azusa Pacific University.
 
Wichmann is currently in third place at the Mt. SAC Relays Multi-Events with 3,161 points while Sheppard is in second place at the California Invitational Multi-Events with 3,005 points.
 
Wichmann started the competition with a 15th place finish in the 100-meter hurdles with a wind-aided time of 15.06 seconds. She bypassed half of the leaders after posting the day's third-best mark of 5-6.5 (1.69m) in the high jump to sit in seventh place.
 
The Jena, Germany native inched up a few spots after winning the shot put with a heave of 44-4 (13.51m) and finishing the 200-meter dash in 26.86 seconds. Wichmann trails Emily Pearson by seven points for second place while leader Sharon Day accumulated 3,523 points to lead the 17-athlete field.
 
At the California Invitational heptathlon, Sheppard vaulted from 13th place after the first event – 100-meter hurdles (15.52) to second with the meet's top mark in the high jump of 5-7 (1.70m). She held on to second with a 14th place finish in the shot put (32-9.75/10.00m) and rounded out the day with a second place finish in the 200-meter dash (25.44).
 
Her Day 1 total of 3,005 points is a new personal best by 177 points and 195 points behind leader Barbara Nwaba of UC Santa Barbara in the 38-athlete field. In all, Sheppard set new PRs in the 100-hurdles and shot put and tied her best mark in the 200-meter.
 
Both competitions conclude on Thursday. Wichmann needs 1,844 points in the final three disciplines for the NCAA provisional mark and a chance for her fourth consecutive NCAA Championship appearance.
