LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The University of Hawai'i men's tennis team dropped a 6-1 match to national, Pac-10 powerhouse, and No. 9 UCLA, Wednesday afternoon at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. The Warriors fall to 1-4 on the season, while the Bruins improve to 9-4.
UCLA swept the three doubles matches to earn the doubles point. The duo of senior Jeff Fitch and freshman Leo Rosenberg dropped a tight, 8-6 decision to Matt Brooklyn and Michael Look at the No. 2 position. Sophomore Dennis Lajola and junior Andreas Weber had a 5-3 lead but dropped five straight games to lose an 8-5 match at the No. 1 court.
The Warriors lost five of the six singles matches to drop the dual match. The lone Warrior victory came at the No. 1 court. No. 116 Lajola earned a significant victory over No. 76 Haythem Abid, 6-3, 7-6(0). Abid is coming off a huge win over the No. 1 ranked player in the nation, USC's Robert Farah on March 5.
UH lost many close singles matches. Rosenberg fell in three tough sets to No. 86 Michael Look, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 at No. 3. Senior Sascha Heinemann lost a tight 7-6(6), 6-3 match to Holden Seguso at the No. 4 court and Weber had many chances to win the first set in his loss to No. 67 Brooklyn, 7-6(6), 6-0 at the No. 2 position.
The Warriors conclude their two-match Southern California road-trip tomorrow afternoon against Loyola Marymount. First serve is set for 1:30 p.m. at the LMU Tennis Center.
